Notes on Buchanan Club Competitions

The Winter Pairs competition is a match-pointed Club Pairs event played over 7 rounds from September until March.  The best 4 scores will determine the winner of the Peter Duff Trophy.  Players must play with the same partner throughout the competition.

The Winter Teams is a series of 7 "stand alone" Teams-of-Four events.  Prizes will be awarded for each round, but there will not be any overall winner from the series.

The Manning Foster competition is the Club’s Teams-of-Four championship, played on the basis of a qualifying round (and if necessary a Quarter Final) followed by Semi-Final and Final.

The Men’s and Women’s Handicapped Pairs competitions are for the Dave Jolley Cup and the Currie Glen Trophy respectively.

The Chris Harrison competition is a pivot Teams-of-Four event.  Each  player plays a number of boards with each other member of the  team.

Leading players in the Club’s main competitions will be invited to play  for the Carl Dickel Trophy, a one-round match-pointed pairs tournament.

The Summer Pairs is a match-pointed tournament played on Tuesday evenings from May to August.  The best 7 scores determine the winner of the Jim O’Leary Cup.  For "expert" players, only the first 3 results with any one partner will count.

The J K McDonald Trophy is the Club’s individual tournament.

The Westchester Cup is a Teams-of-Four competition.

The Nancy Barr Trophy is a match-pointed mixed pairs tournament.

The Helen Clarkson Cup is a match-pointed pairs tournament.

The Dunmow Flitch is a match-pointed married couples tournament.

The James Clarkson Cup is awarded to the most successful player in the Wednesday tournaments in a calendar year.

 Expert Players
Some club events have special rules for expert players.   For example, expert players are not permitted to play in club No Fear competitions and special rules apply in the Summer Pairs.  A player who plays in a 1st or 2nd Division team, or whose Master Point rank is Scottish Master (or above) is deemed to be an expert player in this context.
